I heard a great quote today - 'A good show is about being emotionally interactive.'

Badda boom ching is back... [Jun. 14th, 2005|01:46 am]
[mood |regreting not going to bed hours ago]

Got back on the drums and did some good focused practice multiple times today. I've had a real slump in not practicing and barely even playing any drums over the last 2 months so Im keen to get back on the stool and realign myself on the path to super human skills!

Guitar widdle [Apr. 20th, 2005|09:55 pm]
Dug into March issue of Guitar Techniques article called Play Faster Today. Licks 1-18 (legato) and 31-34 picking. Some cool stuff. Also got back into Stetina (single string) Ex25.

Note to self: Do this shit and I will be a shred monster!

Almost forgot [Mar. 29th, 2005|02:58 pm]
Almost forgot about this little journal till the other day!

Have been diging into trying to get my ASIO-Scope-Logic shit running again as it is easter holiday. Learnt how to set up aux FX and do crazy shit to my drums in real time in the process of reading my the manuel.

Havent played much at all in the last 2-3 weeks, so much for being inspired by gigs in Melb. My head is more in the technical place at the moment rather than the musical...

ZDF launch this Friday which Im feeling rather uninspired for which is a pity. I have my 7 string guitar on the way so looking forward to digging into that later in the week.

Enthused [Jan. 11th, 2005|01:34 am]
[mood |ummm, enthused]

Had drumming mate Andrew Swift come around on Friday for the 1st time for a jam. Was cool, just launched straight into in the moment I plugged in. Got a few cool things going, one in particular that I reckon I could easily turn into a song.

Actually spending an hour practicing drums tonight was surprise enough but then I felt so enthused I picked up my guitar, opened my filing cabinet, took out 'Speed mechanics for lead guitar' and metrognome'd my ass off for an hour straight. It felt like college days, it also felt veeery overdue!

Drums and axes [Dec. 10th, 2004|12:47 am]
Last day at Prospect High for the year yesterday. I had heaps of gaps through the day so managed to put the time to good use and learn some guitar stuff from the latest Total Guitar. Dug into Megadeth's Hangar 18 and a very cool country/metal thing by John 5, Marilyn Manson's former axe weilder.

The OVER-information age [Oct. 29th, 2004|01:47 am]
[mood |Organising]
[music |Jeff Golub - The Soul Sessions]

I always begin to worry when I start becoming one of those people who start collecting (more often than not 'downloading') stuff at such a rate that I dont even use/watch/listen to it. If you like to collect something for the sake of its collection fine, but that is not the case here. This is all stuff that I intend on using. So in an attempt to combat this little bastard from biting me in the butt here is all the stuff that I have collected in recent weeks and for the most part - recent days, so that I have a list of what to not to forget to dig into:

Jam with Van Halen - Book & CD
Jam with Gary Moore - Book & CD
Blues Chops - Book & CD
Guitar Soloing - Book & CD
Modern Rock - Book & CD (good rock songs for teaching.)

Analogue X Plug-ins: Tap-tempo, gate, audio arpeggiator, midi arpeggiator etc

Double Trouble - file duplicate deleting app, Gmail toolbar, iTunes 4.7

Creamware Soundcard
Park Wars (South Park)
Jordan Rudees - Keyboard Mastery

Audio: Jeff Golub - 'The Soul Sessions', Calexico - A Feast Of Wire

Borrowed stuff: Metallica St.Anger, Megadeath video, Shevy, Deadlock, Jade, Orange Goblin, No Doubt DVD

Main the drums real. [Oct. 17th, 2004|05:18 am]
Ive been up all night setting up 'drumkit from hell' to work with my drum kit. No real problems just tweaking, fiddling and generally learning. Im getting pretty good result after minimal tweaking, its really mainly just the toms that are sound sounding really wooden and fake. Apart from them its getting pretty close to sound quite real. The battle will continue and a more reasonable hour... right now my yawn is telling me to sleep.

Audio Midi battles [Oct. 14th, 2004|11:34 am]
Battled with the evil that is MIDI over the last few nights. Managed, after about a total of 8-9hours to get most oddities sorted. Now have to move onto trying to suss out latency, drivers etc. Its looking like Im gonna make the move and buy a new soundcard to something that XP will recognise.

Electro fiddling [Oct. 11th, 2004|01:52 pm]
Was up until the wee hours last night fiddling with audio stuff, namely Logic's ESX sampler, converted a bunch of AKAI samples to try out on it, Guitar Rig, Absynth, and fiddled around with the MIDI finally getting my keyboard and drum kit triggering simultaneously.

Attempted to start something semi metal but realised I really need to come up with something at an earlier hour cos at 3am it quickly turns into noodling.

Downloaded a Dave Weckl drum video today and watched half of that, very cool.

Before I become a robot... [Oct. 6th, 2004|12:01 am]
Stayed back at Lilydale for an hour after teaching today and got stuck into the drums. Im kinda woried Im almost getting 'to used to' my electro kit cos its all I get to play. Was possibly the longest Ive ever spent playing on a real drum kit so that was good. Might do the same thing next week. I get so used to these ultra bouncy pads.

Tinkling the Ivory [Sep. 29th, 2004|05:54 pm]
Been really digin into the keys since the gig on Saturday night. Its weird, in a round about way it was a mate saying it was a surprise to see me not playing any guitar in the band that inspired me to suddenly wanna really work on my keys playing. Im not sure what the thought process was that made a comment like that make me wanna work on my keys playing but either way Ive been suddenly envisioning what being good keys player could allow me to do in ZDF. As always, its just a phase but I will try and make it last as long as I can. Any progress is good progress.

So for my own personal reference, Ive been practicing: D minor, Eminor, Db Minor with both hands and in sequenced leaps of diatonic 3rds. And ofcourse the trickier ZDF parts, namely: Heneh and Stained.

Drum practice isn't as frequent as I would like but when I do (maybe twice a week) its pretty focused. Anyway, I'm learning a lot on the creative side of things as I listen to and watch stuff.

blah [Sep. 21st, 2004|01:33 am]
Got 5 new songs start for the duo last night: She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5, Flesh & Blood - The Waifs, Who's Gonna Save Us - Living End, Some Kind Of Wonderful - Joss Stone, My Favourite Mistake - Sheryl Crow

After that worked on drums from 11:30pm till 2:30am! Talk about going off into my own little world... Worked on 16th note rolls to the metronome (140bpm max) and Megalomaniac a little more. Also started Just Because by Jane's Addiction.

Had duo practice at midday running those 5 songs. In the arvo charted Here For The Party and Runaway Train.

(no subject) [Sep. 19th, 2004|01:33 am]
Spent a good 3 hours or so workin on drums tonight. Dug into Megalomaniac for a bit, some clave rhythms (not sure what defines a clave but they are bloody good for independance!) worked up the metronome with single stroke rolls and an alternating closed/open hat groove Ive been workin on this week. Lots to learn but its all goin well.

Got together with Cara and sussed out some more duo songs today. Missplaced all my new charts so that kinda sucked. Finally got to see our add in Bridetas, the only music add! Here's hoping we clean up with weddings and make millions. Its good paying work and weddings are generally pretty easy.

Just practicing keys for these ZDF songs now as we have a practice tomorrow. These new songs are pumpin so I really gotta nail em ready for the Batty gig next Saturday night.

Back to duo [Sep. 12th, 2004|08:58 am]
1st duo get together with Cara in about 9 months yesterday. It will be good to get out and play gigs again, make some extra money, be social and not waste a perfectly good weekend being lonely and bored.

Ive been watching a very nifty Reason tutorial and fiddling with Absynth to try and suss out to sequence rhythms and phrases in patches. I came up blank, my only thought is it must be done with an external editor cos I tried tweaking every fader, knob and slider on the thing and the phrase wouldn't change.

Downloaded a few albums lately: VAST - Music For People, Fountains Of Wayne x 2, Maroon 5, Sugarcult, Andy Timmons.

Have been practicing drums a bit. Hmmm, really gotta get out of the house.

Zero + 1 [Sep. 6th, 2004|02:37 pm]
Did a big Zero Degrees Freedom practice today diging right into a new song of Frech's. It was a solid four hours, we did a fair bit of changing things in the song and recorded a rough demo of it. Now it just needs vocals and a name... (oh, and shit loads of cleaning up!)
